Chengdu

Chéngdū (成都) is no great draw when it comes to major tourist sites – pandas excepted, of course – but many visitors find its laid-back pace and diversity of cultural scenes unexpectedly engaging. It could be its relaxing teahouse culture, with favourite local institutions serving the same brews across generations. Maybe it’s the lively nightlife, with a strong showing of local partiers bolstered by large student and expat populations that gather at craft beer bars and super-hip clubs. It might be the food: famous for heat, history and variety even in the cuisine-rich cultures of China; and very much a point of pride. It is, after all, Unesco's first-ever City of Gastronomy. But who can say for sure?

Chengdu Panda Base

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, a world-renowned conservation center, is located in the northern suburbs of Chengdu, covering an area of about 1500 acres. Known for its eco-friendly landscapes that mimic the pandas' natural habitat, the base features bamboo groves, lakes, and forests, providing a home to over 100 adorable giant pandas.

Visitors can observe these charming creatures up close as they eat, play, and care for their cubs. Highlights include the Sunshine Panda Nursery and Moonlight Panda Nursery, where you can witness the growth of baby pandas. Combining scientific research, breeding, and public education, the base is the perfect place to experience Sichuan’s natural ecology and the charm of China’s national treasure. Often called the "World’s Most Heartwarming Panda Paradise," it’s a must-visit for animal lovers and families alike.

Wuhou Shrine

The Wuhou Shrine in Chengdu is the only temple in China that jointly commemorates a ruler and his minister—Liu Bei, the emperor of Shu Han, and his chancellor, Zhuge Liang. The shrine features towering ancient cypresses, red walls, and black tiles, exuding the rich cultural heritage of the Three Kingdoms period. Key attractions include Liu Bei's Hall, Zhuge Liang's Hall, the Three Loyalties Temple, and the famous "Psychological Warfare Couplet" stele. The serene Hui Mausoleum (Liu Bei's tomb) is also located within the grounds.

Adjacent to the Wuhou Shrine is Jinli Ancient Street, a vibrant hub of Sichuan folk culture and cuisine, offering a perfect blend of Chengdu’s history and local charm.

Du Fu Thatched Cottage

The Du Fu Thatched Cottage in Chengdu is the former residence of the Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu, revered as a "Sacred Site of Chinese Literature." Nestled among bamboo groves and meandering streams, the site features reconstructed historical structures, including the iconic thatched cottage and the Memorial Temple of Du Fu, exuding timeless poetic charm.

The museum houses an extensive collection of stone inscriptions of Du Fu’s poems and ancient artifacts, reflecting his profound compassion, as expressed in his famous verse: "Oh, for a great mansion with ten thousand rooms to shelter all the poor scholars of the world!"

Strolling through this tranquil retreat, visitors can immerse themselves in idyllic scenery while connecting with a thousand years of literary heritage. As one of Chengdu’s most culturally significant landmarks, the cottage offers a serene escape into the soul of Chinese poetry.
